In my quest to build the perfect screenplay??? Based on the endless books on craft going all the way back to Poetics by none other than Artistotle? Yes. The dude in the 300s BC. Yes. A 100+ scripts of varying lengths…

I strived for what worked on the page.

Well?

Filming my directorial debut taught me after all that? What works on the page? May not work on set. Even less in a movie.

And we go back to the word thrown like it can be OBJECTIVELY defined: Quality.

I understand that Robert Pirsig drove himself crazy trying to define it while writing “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.”

Yet?

What the critics like? Not always align with general audience tastes. Film Festival? Their own world too.

Each with their own yardstick.

BUT BUT BUT

Do any of them say the quiet part out loud?

Money is a huge factor in all this. MASSIVE FACTOR.

But only peasants talk money. YOU SHOULD TALKING CRAFT.

I wish someone would have slapped my ass when I was running espousing the party line hook line and sinker.

Since it’s like this pretend idea of genteel when really??? It’s just a massive circle jerk.
