Why yes…

My fancy pants have been circling Producer Script School in my blogs for a minute. And it starts this Sunday at 6:30 PM Mountain. This Covid shit should be over by then. It knocks the wind out of me for sure.

BUT BUT BUT

I’m an indie producer on top of everything… Pivot and keep going.

Here’s the thing…

I’ve been a script reader in some capacity since around 2010 for a variety of contests and film festivals. Been a screener and a film curator too. Got the master of fine arts and a bunch of films.

In business…

I’ve worked in a wide range of fields where I learned: TRANSFERABLE SKILLS.

Cuz Dudes!?!

Many people believe the arts and entertainment run off different business rules than regular business.

Nope for the most part.

Sure. There are some aspects specific to the arts and entertainment

EXCEPT

It’s still about creating products to sell.

Wait! There’s more!!

You can argue that the arts and entertainment are fundamental to everyone’s well being. I believe this.

ALSO???

I know most folks view them like luxury items… Nice to have. Not necessary. Gives a whole different perspective to them when you think about them.

A different way to look at a script: The writer is telling you to trust them with your time. When I see the page count is about 100??? Questionable. Scripts are no longer coming in around the 120 mark unless you’re Christopher Nolan or James Cameron. They also have box office numbers to support this bloat. Beginning writers don’t.

James and Christopher were beginners at one point too.

So????

It’s more than possible to reach their levels. A ton goes into it. No. We’re not covering every nook and cranny since I’m not in their inner circles or close. I was once at an event where a guy had been on Christopher’s set for OPPENHEIMER. You would have thought that he was Christopher’s BFF on the set. Turns out? He was an extra.

Not going to blow smoke up ass like that. Just consider the decentralization of entertainment.

I learned some things from producing MY APOCALYPTIC THANKSGIVING along with my other completed projects and those in development. Yes. I’m an active indie filmmaker and writer. Not just talking about when dinasours roamed the earth cuz I’m do a final pass on two short films just finishing up in post-production. I also just worked out the budget for my next feature that I’m wanting to shoot this winter. No. My camera isn’t blessed by the Netflix approved list. Totally cool. I’m honestly worried about the story more than chasing gear. Those are more when you’re ready to scale instead of doing reps.
