Helloooooooooo!

My mom always made us take three bites out of everything on our plate. And this included the time that she made cow’s tongue for dinner. Nope. She didn’t cut it up either. So? Yup. It looked like a big ole tongue. AND LUCKY ME!?! I had to have three bites of that fucker. GROSSSSSSSS!?! Other foods were much calmer.

As my stepmom was born and raised in Hong Kong, I also learned how to eat with chop sticks during childhood. She also cooked a mix of Chinese food and American food when I lived with my dad and her. We would also go to dim sum after church every Sunday. I’ll never forget the first time that I thought that I ate cow stomach. It was this goopy liquid mess that slimed down my throat. Turns out? I was eating “Congee.” This is rice porridge. I realized this after I had myself some “tripa” tacos when living in Mexico. Tripa is the Spanish word for cow’s stomach. Those are tasty tacos.

The bigger takeaway from all this? I learned that cooking can be adventurous. So????? Yes. I have pretty standard chicken soup in the crock pot. But that other???? My breakfast cereal has Cream of Wheat, quinoa, curry, cinnamon, salt, vanilla, turmeric, raisins, nuts, and ginger. I also use oatmeal instead of Cream of Wheat.

I also discovered Chia seed pudding when living in Los Angeles. I like the coconut milk base with raisins or chopped dates or chopped dried mangos. And I sometimes used cooked pumpkin for the base with a little cinnamon.

Sure. My fresh cranberries only sweetened with dried mangos and cuties the little tangerines didn’t go over as well. But the thing is….

The world doesn’t end if you don’t come up with the “perfect” food combo. It’s fun to play and experiment in the kitchen. Yes. I managed to get cranberries on the wall when cooking. And I regular make a mess in the kitchen. My grandma Alma probably rolls over in her grave whenever I do this.

Fuck it!! Making a big huge mess is part of the fun. CUZ!?! My creativity doesn’t flourish when it can only be contained. A combo of containment and spitballing is best.!!
