Hello!
I’ve been thinking about this more and more while I get together my next feature film projects about being part of a producing team for MY APOCALYPTIC THANKSGIVING (MAT) since I’m on my own now.
After all…
It’s no small feat to put together an entire feature film the size of MAT. It lots of locations, many actors, many extras, visual effects, practical effects, full on score, and the list goes on…
And I’m now working on getting together two microbudget features to be put together in a year and a half on top of my already busy schedule
ALL BY MYSELF
I’ve absolutely been spinning how to compete with that. Scale from MAT while wanting to work budgets under $7,000 for each feature. Dude!?! I know it sounds crazy except that little motor was running in the back of my mind.
EXCEPT???
I all but put together 16+ microbudget short films alone.
Were they the best EVER cinema?
Nope.
But were they learning experiences?
Holy shit were they ever!!!
As their average run time is around five minutes, it means that I’ve roughly put together 80 minutes of finished film.
This is almost the length of a feature.
I also built most of them with two actors. Sure. Some had more. But I overall wasn’t going for massive casts or five thousand locations. If they took place in more than one “location?” They were within walking distance with the exception of one pick up shot at my house.
So?
No company moves or changing base camps.
I also did those shorts on days no longer than eight hours. That was my hard out every time.
My biggest weakness in all that?
Speed.
Most of my scripts were three pages long. If I keep this speed, it would take me 30 days to shoot a 90 page script.
Such nonsense.
So?
I’m thinking about what slows down the filmming.
Jordan Brady challenges the idea of painstakingly setting up the perfect master shot in his commercial acting classes. I love this cuz I primarily focus in on my actors. This move alone is such a time savings rather than doing what has always been done cuz it’s always been done for tradition.
Today’s conclusion?
It’s okay that I’m not going to scale bigger with my first solo project. That will come in time since my solo features are about building onto my career instead of carrying the entire weight of it all.
Can you relate?
As always: Have a glamorous day for fun!!
You go girl
