“You must be Miranda! I absolutely love your resume! You’re such a perfect fit for the job!!”
“I thought that too when I saw your job posting.”
“Oh! No need to stand. We’re not too formal around here.”
“Even better.”
Miranda sits the empty office chair and smiles in relief. Heather smiles back.
“But I do have a question about you’re here and all since you have an out of state phone number. No. I’m not some conspiracy nut thinking all out of staters are evil. It’s more about you sticking around when you find out deers will eat your shrubs.”
“Don’t worry. I have family here. My mom is Lorraine Jensen.”
“Shit. This isn’t going to work out after all.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Of course you don’t cuz I think the whole thing is ridiculous. But pick your battles. And I’ll say this isn’t one. Thanks for coming in. I’m sure that you’ll find something soon.”
“What battle?”
“You really don’t know?”
Miranda shakes her head. Heather fights back a scream and exhales.
“My mom is convinced your mom gave her a nasty look in the tenth grade. She has never recovered.”
“You’re serious?”
“Let me put it to you this way… I’d rather hire someone from California than Lorraine Jensen’s daughter.”
“C’mon.”
“See? You’re not even denying Lorraine would do that.”
“What can I say? My mom gives me nasty looks on the regular since she believes me to be the ultimate fashion risk.”
“Honestly? That’s why I adore her. But my mom? Such the field mouse afraid of her own shadow. So? I don’t want to give her a heart attack.”
“Can you at least make some suggestions for job leads?”
“With your skill set? I’m your only lead here in Magic City.”
“What about you with candidates? Your post is really old.”
“You know moms.”
“That I do. That I do. I appreciate your time.”
“Of course.”
The women stand. Heather offers Miranda her hand. Their overly sweet smiles say everything when their hands touch. Both jump back. Miranda hustles out.
As always: Have a glamorous day for fun!!
