Hello all!
I’ve started going to the cowboy dancing lessons at the High Horse on Tuesday nights from Steve Gillis. He’s an awesome instructor with a ton of fun energy!! It’s such a delight. The High Horse is a cowboy bar with excellent steaks. I’d say their steaks are comparable to Morton’s and Taylor’s Steak House if not better.
And here’s an interesting thing that I’ve figured out about Two Stepping that makes it like moshing: Two Stepping is based on 4/4 time. This is universal for most music including Tantra grooves, Cumbia beats, AND EVEN PUNK MUSIC!! And it’s even more prevalent with hardcore punk since it’s the driving guitars. So???? My ass would be able to two step in mosh pits for hardcore punk – my favorite kind of punk. And if I throw in a few punches??? I’m good to go.
Why the hell would I learn cowboy dancing?? Dudes!?! I’m in Montana. Granted: I’ve resisted this for literal decades. I also think it’s goofy that it’s called the “TWO STEP” when??? It consists of four steps – two fast and two slow. The speed order depends if you’re doing local Two Step or International Two Step.
BUT BUT BUT a funny thing happened to me when I was living deep in South Central Los Angeles during 2024… As a job coach for a young woman with special needs, we worked at a drug store at Slauson and Western Ave. They piped in music all day long that tended to be a lot of country. I thought that was odd being that we were in South Central except it’s likely a company wide playlist. That country music reminded of Montana since that’s a lot of what I listened to when growing up.
Sure. I grew up on the classics like Waylon Jennings, Kenny Rogers, Patsy Cline, and even senior Hank Williams and his son Hank Williams Junior. Heck. My older sister Kim was a internet roadie for the “Country Comfort” Tour forever ago with Hank Williams, Jr, Travis Tritt, Charlie Daniels, Jodi Messina, and maybe some others. I saw that in Biloxi, Mississippi, when I was living in New Orleans at the time.
My mom and I also came up with the character of “Cowboy Bob” for road trips. He was a background singer for Patsy Cline songs. We would take turns being Cowboy Bob and Patsy. My sister Heidi and I also sang a lot of Patsy along with that song “Going to the Country” from Canned Heat cuz my mom had bought that old compilation “Freedom Rock.” Remember that??
While you may not consider the song “Sweet Home Alabama” to be a country song? I do have a funny story from back in days from the last time the speed limit in Montana was “prudent” instead of a number. Yes. The Federal Government blackmailed Montana into getting a numerical speed limit for highway funding. I digress. Cuz see… My sister Kim and I were singing the song “Sweet Home Alabama” at the top of lungs when speeding along. A highway patrol officer pulled us over since a speed limit came into effect when the sun went down. As he was writing my sister a ticket, she asked if he took credit cards.
I have a couple of other stories around country music that I’ll save for another day. And it was in listening to all that country in South Central that helped me in the middle of a very tough time cuz it reminded of those fun times.
So? I’m working learning different cowboy dancing to transport anywhere and be done to any kind of music based on 4/4 time. And that includes tonight when I go to the monthly soda pop dance at Westpark Village with the Cimarron Band.
YUP. This is also part of a bigger project that I’ll be talking about soon enough!!
As always: Have a glamorous day for fun!!
Fun Times for sure! S
