Happy Saturday!
I know… I know… It’s the weekend. But I didn’t want you all to think I completely fell off the planet. It was only for a little bit. Life has been beyond hectic to put it mildly. I’ll be honest that I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I weren’t. The good news is that I’m so busy for the foreseeable future that I won’t find out any time soon.
And I want to tell you about one of the things that kept me quite busy. It’s the script that got me to be a Finalist in the Writers for Writers 2019 Fellowship. The information about their fellowships is here. I originally named it “DANI” after its protagonist. This isn’t the most creative of all titles for sure. It was a placeholder until I came up with something more dynamic. But I have a hard time coming up with all-encompassing titles when I’m in the throes of my stories. My brain needs time to process except I have already submitted this script to a few more fellowships. I think that this title might stick.
We’ll have to see… The big thing is that this is not just any other script. Parts of it are still raw while I’ve developed other parts of it. I actually began this script while I was in the throes of my thesis. It was my pleasure script that gave me a break from working on the thesis scripts. I’ve developed it a lot since then. It’s just that it needs more work. And I’m hoping that these different fellowships will help me to develop it even further. Okay. That would be the understatement of the year. I want this script developed so much that my characters feel like real people. Plus, I want a compelling story that causes people to want to turn the page.
Here’s another thing about this script… I honestly don’t want to stop at it just being amazing. It’s that I working on this script to produce it along with Richard Soriano. Everything I learned from working on MY APOCALYPTIC THANKSGIVING and my other projects certainly will help me tackle whatever comes up while I produce this script. Plus, I have other projects that I’ll tell you about in the coming weeks.
I’m also thinking about directing it. But this isn’t a piece that I’m not 100% set on doing that. My reasoning is that it’s more important to me that my script gets produced than I have to be the one to direct it. As I’m only moving into directing this year, I may not have enough of a name to direct it when it’s ready to be in the can. We’ll have to see because anyone knows that getting indie films off the ground can take years. Honestly? They do take years especially since many of them don’t have big names attached. Let’s also be real that they still do even if do have names attached.
My characters are also predominately Filipino and Filipina/Caucasian. I honestly only know of one or two actors that could be a possible fit given the age of my characters. This means that there aren’t many names at this point. But this could change significantly once we get ready to go into production. This is the cool part of the creative world where new people with new ideas always pop up.
I’ll tell you more about this script when I know more…
My other thing is that I’m going to be getting back to writing about writing next week. I’m excited about my column. It’s all in the knuckles.
Have a great weekend!
